2016-17 M&M Best Mentors

My mentor is Brandi Jones. As a future higher education administrator and a woman of color, it is important to have a mentor/ally who understands my experiences. Not only does Brandi understand my experiences, but she shares her experiences as a teaching method. I learn through her mistakes and successes. Brandi also encourages, supports and challenges me. A few days prior to the end of the fall semester, I was extremely stressed about my finances and finding a job. She asked what I was doing at that moment to curb my stress. She challenged and encouraged me to submit my first job application that day. Brandi is also constantly available to help me and offer advice. She resides in California so there is a 3 hour time difference, but she is willing to stay up late or wake up early to speak to me. She makes herself readily available. I have participated in many mentoring programs, but she is by far, one of the best mentors I have had.

Jasmine Phillips

Higher Education

My mentor is Abby Foley Hare. Being an international student, I was experiencing the stress from academic demand, cultural shock, homesick, and language barrier when I first came to Penn. Abby not only provided me with the information I need, the tips for study, but also tried her best to help me "land" safely. From psychological advice to handle pressure, life advice for better time management, study tips to handle academic problems, and even necessary tips to help me familiarize the American culture (even tips for travels), she provided the information as much and specific and possible, and she was always nice and patient to me. With her help, I spent a happy semester, and achieved GPA 4.0. She is now helping me with finding internship and writing resume. I think I'm ready now to try to stand on my own, and I'm willing to providing other students with the wonderful opportunities to learn from Abby!

Yuan Li

Intercultural Communication

My mentor is Megan Herman and she's amazing. She's extremely organized and responsible. She made a clear plan of our mentoring sessions at the beginning - we met biweekly for 1 hour using Google Hangouts, each time 10 minutes tech talk about the articles we read, 40 minutes exploring a theme about job search, and 10 minutes planning for next meeting. She offered detailed editing suggestions for my resume that brought my resume to a much higher level. She advised me on networking strategies on job fairs. She shared her experiences as a computer science education program manager Google, which is highly related to my career plan. She also helped me practice some classic questions that may appear in job interviews. In short, She's an inspirational woman and I really learned a lot from her. She deserves the "Best Mentor Award"!

Seth Morones-Ramirez was an amazing mentor, because he was always willing to go out of his way to support me. He helped me transition easily into graduate school life. Academically he helped me get through particularly challenging classes, and always gave great, honest advice when I was navigating specific course selection for my program. In addition to his academic support, Seth made sure that my whole life, not just my academic life, was going well. He always checked to ensure I was happy, had friends and felt comfortable in Philadelphia.  He was extremely supportive, always willing to help, and gave honest and constructive advice. He always made time to meet with me, and worked around my location/scheduling. Seth was a great mentor, and I am very thankful to have had the opportunity to get to know him.

Maria Morrison

Education Policy

I had an extremely wonderful experience with my mentor, Aimee Yuka Kim. She gave me great academic support, such as by having weekly or bi-weekly meetings to help me prepare for my Ph.D. applications. I am always impressed by her detailed feedback. Besides academic support, I also received great emotional support. My mentor is very responsive to any questions or problems I have and gives me very thoughtful advice. Also, she invited me to her house to celebrate Thanksgiving day, and we spent time together to celebrate the last week of the fall semester. These experiences helped me adjust to a new environment and enriched my life during graduate studies.

Megan Sage was an incredible mentor to me. Each time we talked she listened deeply to what I was saying and always had a unique perspective based on her own rich experiences. I don't know what I would have done without Megan this semester! Mentorship has always been an area of deep interest for me and the mentors I have had along the way have profoundly shaped my life. When I saw that PennGSE offered a mentorship program, I was very excited. Moving to a big city alone and starting a new chapter of my life at a prestigious academic institution was a bit daunting to say the least. I nominated Megan because she helped ease that transition for me with her positive attitude, energy, and continual support. The word for mentor was first introduced in Homer’s Odyssey. Before sending his son on his epic journey, Ulyssess drafted the help of his friend Mentor, a highly respected and wise teacher, to educate and provide intellectual and emotional support. Megan embodies what it means to be a mentor. Megan is an accomplished, intelligent, and fascinating woman who generously shares her experiences with me. The vulnerability she shows creates a physically and emotionally safe environment that allows me to open up and really dig deeper into how I can improve or gain new perspective on any situation. During our meetings, Megan always asks what have been my "peaks and pits" of the week, and listens empathetically as I share what is going on in my life, what I am enjoying, what I am struggling with, etc. Megan has a great perspective and attitude on life, and I am thankful she shares her experiences and provides continual support and guidance for mine. For all of these reasons, I strongly believe Megan deserves the best mentor award.

Ellie Fogarty has been a fabulous mentor! She is extremely busy, but still makes time to meet with me and to come to events on campus that I've invited her to. She's great at facilitating connections and is an amazing thought partner - she is always willing to share new ideas that push my thinking, and she actively contributes to projects I'm working on through my classes. When we ran into each other at an event for Executive Doctorate alumni, she took the time to check in with me even though she had a packed schedule. I appreciate her so much, and I couldn't ask for a better mentor.

My mentor, Lingjun Chen is really responsive and caring. We will meet regulary and have a chat on everything. Before meeting, Lingjun will help to set the discussion points. Meeting with Lingjun is not only for fun, but also teaches me a lot. I learnt the daily life of PhD students, how to deal with the balance between life and work, even how to manage the long-distance relationship! Strongly recommend!
